Remove airborne contaminants with an air filtration system

Though you may not realize it, the air quality in your home probably isn’t that great. Millions and millions of microscopic particles are being circulated through your home’s air at any given time, many of which can be harmful to you under certain circumstances. Dust, mites, pollen, and dander are all allergens and lung irritants, prone to inflaming sinuses and causing coughing and sneezing fits. Meanwhile, viruses, bacteria, and mold can infect you and cause more serious illnesses. The best way to address these issues is to install an air filtration system. What is an air filtration system? An air filtration system is a mechanical system designed to remove airborne contaminants from your air. Often referred to simply as an "air filter," an air filtration system is a woven fiber mesh stretched across a plastic or metal frame. The filter is typically installed at the return air duct for your forced air systems, forcing all circulated air to pass through it. As the air moves through the air filter, any particles that it carries above a certain size will become snared in the mesh. The airflow will continue unimpeded, while the particles remain behind in the filter.

Why install an air filtration system? Most people who install air filtration systems do so because their indoor air quality is being substantially and negatively affected by airborne contaminants. Allergy sufferers are a prime example. Just a small amount of dust or pollen is often enough to set off an allergy attack for some people, and an air filter could drastically reduce the number of particulates in the air. People with weakened or compromised immune systems can also benefit from air filtration systems. They tend to need more powerful air filters than most, but with the right setup, the number of germs being circulated can be reduced to the point of drastically improving the person’s health. If you don’t seem to be able to breathe as well in your home, whether you’re always sneezing or experiencing frequent colds, you might want to try installing an air filtration system. We can help improve your air quality, your health, and your quality of life.

There are many kinds of air filtration systems, each rated according to the MERV system. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is used to determine how effective an air filter is at catching different sizes of contaminants. Filters with a MERV rating from 1–4 are generally only good for stopping relatively larger pieces of debris, like dust and pollen. Higher MERV ratings, like those in the 10–12 range, are capable of capturing much smaller particles like some bacteria cells. There are MERV ratings even higher than that, but they are generally only used for environments like surgical rooms and are often overkill for residential environments.
